People at their best live unframed, going beyond expectations to surprise and delight us. When you settle into the frameless back of a SAYL chair, you experience unprecedented freedom of movement and beautiful support—with an extremely small environmental impact.
As affordable as it is inventive, SAYL proves our belief that a reasonably priced work chair can be well designed and include leading-edge ergonomics. Designing SAYL started with understanding the needs of people and designing an ergonomic work chair that incorporates everything that Herman Miller chairs are known for. By rethinking every part, we were able to create a better, smarter chair that sets a new reference point in its class for performance, ergonomics, quality, and appearance.
3D Intelligent Technology
SAYL's revolutionary 3D Intelligent suspension back molds the support you need into the back material, eliminating hard edges and the need for a frame. The suspension back is a flexible elastomer that adapts to each person's unique shape and provides exceptional comfort and support for just about all body types.
Yves Béhar is big on environmental responsibility in design. The result is a lightweight chair that is 93 percent recyclable. Structural components are hollowed out, reducing weight and volume. The ArcSpan, arm structure, and tilt mechanism are fused into a single strong part that also reduces the chair's weight. The SAYL work chair weighs only 37 pounds.
SAYL chairs ship ready to assemble.
"The Best for the Most for the Least" It was the standard for the furniture designs of Charles and Ray Eames and an inspiration for Yves Béhar when working on SAYL: Make a product that is the best design for the most people at the smallest cost.
"Our goal was to make a work chair that is everything a Herman Miller chair should be in terms of ergonomics, elegant styling, superior engineering, and ecological responsibility—and be able to offer it at a very attainable price."
Elegant Anywhere Shape matters, especially when introducing a chair into your home. At a desk, around a table, in the living room. The organic shape of the SAYL back makes it elegant anywhere, from every angle.
And SAYL color choices let you express your individuality. Mix colors on the seat, back and arm pads for a bold look. Or match them for a more traditional appearance.
Beauty, Elegance, Respect
We like working with designer Yves Béhar, who designed our Leaf and Ardea personal lights. We like the way he thinks unframed, never constrained by what's expected or typical.
So we went to him when we wanted a highly affordable ergonomic work chair that would incorporate everything Herman Miller is known for—beautiful design, first-class ergonomics, elegant engineering, and respect for the environment. Béhar began by scratching a quote from Charles Eames onto his sketchpad: "The best for the most for the least." And then Béhar, who calls San Francisco home, took a look at his city's best-known landmark: the Golden Gate Bridge.
Suspending a Chair
Béhar wondered, could the engineering principles of a suspension bridge be applied to a chair? It turned out that not only was it possible, but using a suspension tower to support an unframed back would reduce materials, weight, and environmental impact. The flexible elastomer suspension material could be stretched in a way that provided the greatest tension at points where support is needed and the least in areas that would allow for the most expansive range of motion.
So there was the concept. Creating the actual chair wasn't quite that simple. SAYL wasn't designed on a computer. It was sketched and sketched again, and numerous prototypes were built and rejected before the design was right. He describes the process as "draw, build, break, and repeat until you arrive at something unique." So why the name "SAYL?" Take a look at the chair from the side. See the resemblance to a full mainsail? The name reflects the sailing vessels that pass beneath the bridge that inspired the original design. Replacing the "i" in "SAIL" with a "y" is a nod to the innovative Y-Tower structure of the work chair.

Love My Chair!
Written by BD from MD Jun 19, 2011
I am very happy that I purchased this chair. My back doesn't hurt as it used to, nor do my legs go numb from improper sitting. It's also a cool looking chair.

I like many of you have tried to find a chair that works with your particular back and or problems with it. I've kind of come close here and there, but something was always lacking, made my back feel no so good. I'd keep trying and then thinking I need a very expensive chair and looked at several models including the Areo. Came very close to purchasing one on ebay and then thought to look at the Herman Miller site. As soon as I saw the SAYL, I knew I was onto something, ordered one right away which came in two days and I was absolutely right, the SAYL does my back justice, finally I am happy sitting in it for hours on end and immediately. Worth every penny!!
Fantastically designed!! Quite a revelation, thank you for building one for me!! Happy back here!!
Purchased a Sayl to help my back...

Purchased a sayl for a few reasons, sitting for long periods of time at work, to help with some back pain (caused by the sitting at work for long periods of time) and for it's good looks. It certainly gets people talking about it when they see it. The chair is well made, comfortable, has a multitude of adjustments and really does help with your posture. A great chair.
SAYL Chair review

I'd give the chair 3 1/2 stars. Pros: It's comfortable and has a smaller footprint than most Herman Miller chairs I'm familiar with. For me, it's a good looking chair.
Cons: Doesn't rise as high as I would like. Lumbar support isn't well designed, because it doesn't offer any support that I can tell. The arm rests feel cheap, although they work well enough. I think you could buy a better chair for the money, but you would probably not get the Herman Miller warranty.
Overall, I would probably purchase this again, but I would look at other brands.
