With its up-to-date LED technology, Flute provides high-quality light output at an amazingly low cost—about $1.13 a year.
The Flute Personal Light has a life span of 24 years, during which you won't ever have to change a bulb. It provides 200 lumens of medium-warm light, which is kind to your eyes. And it's 85 percent recyclable and made in the USA.
|Bright Light, Big Value
Flute saves you money in all kinds of ways. It uses the latest in LED technology to provide high-quality light output while consuming 30-50+% less energy than traditional task lights, generating 31 lumens per watt of energy consumed.
Flute's LED chips require no bulb replacement or service over the estimated 24-year life span with average use. So you also save big on small maintenance costs.
|Design Story: Accommodating Small Footprints
Providing better, more effective products to connect individuals to their work is one of the key goals of the Thrive Portfolio, whose products include the Flute personal light.
Designed by Tom Newhouse, the Flute personal light—with its simple aesthetics and light weight—provides uncomplicated compatibility within any office footprint. Flute can be used freestanding or with a surface mount. Flute’s lightscale design can also help reduce a user’s carbon footprint by minimizing packaging, shipping, and storage. And, it incorporates the latest in LED technology to provide high-quality light output, while consuming 30-50+% less energy than traditional task lights. Using only a total of 5.2 watts of energy, Flute provides a total of 160 lumens and has a lifespan of more than
60,000 hours (about 23 years with average use).
Herman Miller’s Design Protocol
Our commitment to corporate sustainability naturally includes minimizing the environmental impact of each of our products. Our Design for Environment team (DfE) applies environmentally sensitive design standards to both new and existing Herman Miller products, utilizing the McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) Cradle to CradleSM Design Protocol.
Cradle to Cradle Design Protocol goes beyond regulatory compliance to thoroughly evaluate new product designs in three key areas:
•Material Chemistry and Safety of Inputs—What chemicals are in the materials we specify, and are they the safest available?
• Disassembly—Can we take products apart at the end of their useful life, to recycle their
• Recyclability—Do the materials contain
|recycled content, and more importantly, can the materials be recycled at the end of the product’s useful life?
Flute personal light components are constructed from zinc, steel, electronics, aluminum and plastic.
Flute is up to 85 percent recyclable at the end of its useful life.
Flute is comprised of 36 percent recycled materials. This figure breaks down to 19-percent post-consumer and 17-percent pre-consumer recycled content.
Steel components contain approximately 33 percent recycled content and are 100 percent recyclable.
Designed by Tom Newhouse, Flute embodies two of Tom's passions—the study of emerging office issues and the implementation of green design concepts. Flute can be used in any work environment as a freestanding lamp or with a surface mount. It uses the latest in LED technology to provide high-quality light output.
Manufactured from 36% recycled material, Flute consumes 30 to 50+% less energy than traditional task lights. It uses only a total of 5.2 watts of energy to provide 31 lumens per watt and has a life span of more than 60,000 hours (24 years with average use). At the end of its useful life, it is 85% recyclable.
"I have been passionate about the environment for the past 25 years," Tom says, "and I will continue to be. That's one reason why I love to work with Herman Miller."
